the air on earth is as Reel Mowers, Etc. is truly a green business! Hello, I am Marjorie King, founder and owner of Reel Mowers, Etc. When I started this business in 1999 I was looking for more than a great business idea, I was on a mission to fight back against the air and noise pollution that had caused my painful, then-chronic daily migraines and asthma. By early 2002, the business was successful enough to allow me to leave the city and move to a remote mountain community in Northern California, where the peace and clean air have all but totally eliminated my health problems. However, I will never forget the importance of not only offering environmentally friendly products, but of conducting a business that treads lightly upon the earth in every respect. Perhaps the biggest environmental advantage of my home-based business is the elimination of vehicular miles traveled. I do not drive to work. In fact I usually make just one business trip a month in my fuel-efficient vehicle, combining that trip with personal errands for maximum benefit. When I need help I will hire a local virtual assistant who works from her home office. Because all of my suppliers ship their merchandise directly to the customer, we are eliminating an incalculable number of vehicle miles traveled, which in some businesses includes a shipment first from the supplier to the warehouse or store, and then to the end-user customer. Operating Reel Mowers, Etc. from a home office eliminates the need to build, heat, cool, light and maintain an additional office space. This business requires very little extra energy, primarily just what is needed to run the computer during work hours. My small home is insulated for best use of heating and cooling resources. I keep the thermostats set at energy-saving levels. My desk is situated near a bright window, so lighting is mostly natural daylight and when there is not enough of that, then energy efficient and long-lasting compact fluorescent bulbs complement the available light. Open windows bring cooling breezes in summer, so that the evaporative cooler is only on during the hottest weather. The floors are cleaned with a dust mop and plain cool water, so they do not require any toxic chemicals or electrical appliances. Most of my suppliers now email statements and other correspondence to help save paper and fuel. Paper is used, reused and then most is composted or recycled. Printer cartridges are recycled. There is no need to transport myself to lunch or my lunch to work. I can drink the fresh well water and eat here, so there is no energy wasted bottling and hauling drinking water, no plastic bottles to produce or recycle, no need for paper and plastic products for brown-bagging, or other energy used by eating restaurant meals or from vending machines. I use cloth towels and cloth napkins, no paper towels or napkins. When weather permits, I enjoy using a solar cooker to cook my lunch and dinner. Lawns can be a priceless asset or a destructive detriment to the environment, depending on the manner of maintenance and care.
